New friends assume I've been fit all my life, no doubt because they've only known me as Size 6 Carole, not Size 18-20 Carole. When I share my status as an expert--over 40 years of failed efforts--they seem surprised.
When I go on to share that I still have to focus to keep the pounds off and the muscles trim, they seem puzzled. They've assumed that achieving and maintaining my current level of fitness is a piece of cake. Whoops! Wrong analogy. I understand their error because it is I think easy to assume, as I often did, that some people were just lucky. They achieved their fit and trim bodies effortlessly.
In truth, this doesn't happen very often. Even my most fit friends share their struggles with me just as I lean on them. We encourage each other because we've "been there" and "done that." Over time, we've come to realize that we need each other's support to succeed.
That's not to say we don't have a lot of fun! We aren't grim or rigid. Rather, we are committed to the healthiest lifestyle we can create for our bodies and we're also committed to having a great time as travel together on the unending quest for fitness.
We want to be the best we can be at every age, at every stage in our life. And more and more of us are undertaking the journey!
Tennis, experimenting with cooking and creating new recipes, traveling especially when I get to visit my son and his wife and child in France, writing, sharing time with family, getting fit with friends, teaching, quilting, sewing, and shopping (one of my favorites).
